We have all heard of antioxidants, but have we heard of the
mother of all antioxidants? One that is the secret to prevent cancer, heart
disease, aging, neurological issues and more? This single antioxidant has been
studied in great depth yet most of us know nothing about it and many doctors have no idea how to address the
epidemic of its deficiency in humans.
We are of course talking about Glutathione (pronounced
“gloota-thigh-own.”) This is a powerful detoxifier and immune booster and is
crucial to a healthy life. Although the body does make some of its own
Glutathione, poor food quality, pollution, toxic environments, stress,
infections and radiation are all depleting out bodies glutathione.
What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is a simple molecule produced naturally in the
body at all times. It’s a combination of three building blocks of protein or
amino acids — cysteine, glycine and glutamine.
The best part of glutathione is that is contains sulfur
chemical groups that work to trap all the bad things like free radicals and
toxins such as mercury and heavy metals in our body then flush them out. This
is especially important in our current world of heavy metal bombardment.
Where Can You Get Glutathione?
The body makes it, but it’s often not enough in our
strenuous environment. Here are some food sources that either contain
glutathione or its precursors to help the body produce more.
* Broccoli
* Brussels sprouts
* Cabbage
* Cauliflower
* Avocados
* Peaches
* Watermelon
* Cinnamon
* Cardamom
* Turmeric (Curcumin)
* Tomatoes
* Peas
* Garlic
* Onions
* Red peppers
Notice they are all healthy foods we often don’t get enough
of? This is another big issue with our diets. We consume a lot of junk, meat,
dairy and processed foods, items that clinically have been proven to be the
number one causes of heart disease and illness yet we consume them in huge quantities. The key is to limit
these and eat a lot of fresh, lively foods that provide nutrients and don’t ask
the body to perform a mega job to digest.
You can also increase your exercise as glutathione
production increases when you exercise. Breathing and sweating are also great
ways to get rid of toxins in the body.
Glutathione Protects Against Chronic Illness
What makes glutathione so important and powerful is that it
recycles antioxidants. When your body is dealing with free radicals, it is
essentially passing them from one molecule to another. They might go from
vitamin C to vitamin E to lipoic acid and then to glutathione where they are
cooled off. Antioxidants are recycled at this point and the body can now
regenerate another glutathione molecule to go back at it again.
Glutathione is crucial for helping your immune system fight
chronic illness as it acts as the carrier of toxins out of your body. Like a
fly trap, toxins stick to glutathione and they are carried to the bile into the
stools and out of the body. Glutathione is also powerful enough that it has
been shown to help in the treatment of AIDS greatly. The body is going to get
in touch with oxidants and toxins, the more we can deal with those the better
our body will be at staying strong, this is why glutathione is so important.
9 Final Tips
Dr. Mark Thyman has given 9 tips to increase your
Glutathione levels. Check them out!
1. Consume sulfur-rich foods. The main ones in the diet are
garlic, onions and the cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards,
cabbage, cauliflower, watercress, etc.).
2. Try bioactive whey protein. This is great source of
cysteine and the amino acid building blocks for glutathione synthesis. As you
know, I am not a big fan of dairy, but this is an exception — with a few
warnings. The whey protein MUST be bioactive and made from non-denatured
proteins (“denaturing” refers to the breakdown of the normal protein
structure). Choose non-pasteurized and non-industrially produced milk that
contains no pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics. Immunocal is a prescription
bioactive non-denatured whey protein that is even listed in the Physician’s
Desk Reference.
3. Exercise boosts your glutathione levels and thereby helps
boost your immune system, improve detoxification and enhance your body’s own
antioxidant defenses. Start slow and build up to 30 minutes a day of vigorous
aerobic exercise like walking or jogging, or play various sports. Strength
training for 20 minutes 3 times a week is also helpful.
One would think it would be easy just to take glutathione as
a pill, but the body digests protein — so you wouldn’t get the benefits if you
did it this way. However, the production and recycling of glutathione in the
body requires many different nutrients and you CAN take these. Here are the
main supplements that need to be taken consistently to boost glutathione.
Besides taking a multivitamin and fish oil, supporting my glutathione levels
with these supplements is the most important thing I do every day for my
personal health.
4. N-acetyl-cysteine. This has been used for years to help
treat asthma and lung disease and to treat people with life-threatening liver
failure from Tylenol overdose. In fact, I first learned about it in medical
school while working in the emergency room. It is even given to prevent kidney
damage from dyes used during x-ray studies.
5. Alpha lipoic acid. This is a close second to glutathione
in importance in our cells and is involved in energy production, blood sugar
control, brain health and detoxification. The body usually makes it, but given
all the stresses we are under, we often become depleted.
6. Methylation nutrients (folate and vitamins B6 and B12).
These are perhaps the most critical to keep the body producing glutathione.
Methylation and the production and recycling of glutathione are the two most
important biochemical functions in your body. Take folate (especially in the
active form of 5 methyltetrahydrofolate), B6 (in active form of P5P) and B12
(in the active form of methylcobalamin).
7. Selenium. This important mineral helps the body recycle
and produce more glutathione.
8. A family of antioxidants including vitamins C and E (in
the form of mixed tocopherols), work together to recycle glutathione.
9. Milk thistle (silymarin) has long been used in liver
disease and helps boost glutathione levels.
Survival panic, or will she really blow? A video allegedly
showing bison 'fleeing' from Yellowstone Park's super-volcano went viral after
an earthquake hit the park on March 30.
The backstory began on March 20 when YouTube user Zicutake
uploaded a video entitled Animals Fleeing From Yellowstone Supervolcano?
showing bison running down a road in Yellowstone Park. This was proof, the
video's creators says, that the long dormant super-volcano under the park will
erupt in 2014.
Another YouTube video entitled Animals Leaving Yellowstone?
Earthquakes and Seismic Activity went online on March 23, and it shows Tom
Lupshu, dressed in camouflage and a black beanie, commenting on the same
subject.
Lupshu would later be revealed as the 'source' who
highlighted the 'bison fleeing' video to Zicutake.
It had all seemed like innocent speculative fun until March
30 when a 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit near the Norris Geyser Basin in the
northwest section of Yellowstone, which spans 8,992 sq km of Wyoming, Montana
and Idaho. Although the area is known for small quakes every year, it was the
park's strongest quake since 1980.
And that was when the 'bison fleeing' video, picked up on
alternative news sites like Epoch Times, started receiving a huge surge in
views. But it also triggered a wave of public panic, rippling across the online
community and then back to Yellowstone itself.
Not the end of the world – just yet
Yellowstone park officials, who had to field dozens of calls
and emails from the concerned public demanding if the video's claims are true,
flatly dismissed the 'running bison' evidence.
They say the video actually shows bison galloping down a
paved road that leads deeper into the park – not away from it, as was claimed.
“It was a spring-like day and they were frisky. Contrary to online reports,
it’s a natural occurrence and not the end of the world,” park spokeswoman Amy
Bartlett said.
The park also uploaded their own video to dispel the
super-volcano speculations.
As for the recent earthquake: Even though geologists
confirmed it was the largest to rattle Yellowstone since a 4.8 quake in
February 1980, they say it was benign by seismic standards.
Even the fact that it occurred near an area of ground uplift
tied to the upward movement of molten rock in the super-volcano – whose mouth,
or caldera, is 80km long and 48km wide – failed to worry the scientists.
The fact is neither the quake, the largest among hundreds
that have struck near the geyser basin in the last seven months, nor the uplift
suggest an eruption sooner than tens of thousands of years, said Peter
Cervelli, associate director for science and technology at the US Geological
Survey’s Volcano Science Centre in California.
“The chance of that happening in our lifetimes is
exceedingly insignificant,” said Cervelli, a scientist with the Yellowstone
Volcano Observatory.
Despite assurances by Yellowstone officials and government
geologists that the ancient super-volcano beneath the park is not due to
explode for aeons have apparently done little to quell fears among the
thousands who have viewed recent video postings of the herb.
Bluefin-21, the US-supplied underwater drone fitted to Ocean Shield.
The hunt for missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 was set
to switch to the ocean floor today using a robot submersible after suspected
black box signals were detected, one month to the day since the jet vanished.
After describing sonic "pings" picked up by the
naval vessel Ocean Shield as the "most promising lead" so far, the
head of the Australian-led search operation warned that hopes of finding
surface debris were fading.
Retired Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston said that the moment
was nearing to deploy the US-made autonomous underwater vessel Bluefin-21 to
scour for wreckage on the seabed.
"I haven't had the discussion this morning, we'll be
having that discussion a little later on," he told national radio. "I
imagine we'd be getting very close to that point."
The search is now focusing on a 600-kilometre arc of the
southern Indian Ocean, far off the coast of western Australia.
Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss sounded a note of
optimism.
"Today is another crucial day as we try and reconnect
with the signals that perhaps have been emanating from the black box flight
recorders of MH370," he said.
"The connections two days ago were obviously a time of
great hope that there had been a significant breakthrough."
But he added: "It was disappointing that we were unable
to repeat that experience yesterday."
Ocean Shield is criss-crossing the area to try to home in on
the signals again before launching the five-metre long submersible sonar
device, and Truss indicated the deployment was imminent.
"I understand that we are using the autonomous vehicle
to examine the waters in the areas of interests of today," he said.
The signals are being investigated as the clock ticks past
the 30-day lifespan of the emergency beacons on the two data recorders from the
Malaysia Airlines jet, which vanished on March 8 with 239 people on board en
route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
"As a consequence there is a chance the locator beacon
is about to cease transmission, or has ceased transmission," Houston said.
"I think it's absolutely imperative to find something
else and hopefully when we put the autonomous vehicle down, its capability is
such that it'll be able to find wreckage.
"Unfortunately with the passage of time, oceanic drift
and all the rest of it – particularly as a cyclone went through that area in
the last few days – the chances of finding anything on the surface are
diminishing with time."

Houston explained that the 4.5 kilometre depth of the ocean
floor was the absolute operating limit for a Bluefin-21, which is designed for
deep sea surveying and can carry video cameras.
"It can't go deeper than that, so it's quite incredible
how finely balanced all of this is," he said.
"It's a long, painstaking process, particularly when
you start searching the depths of the ocean floor."
When the sonar detects unusual formations on the ocean
floor, it is brought back to the surface to fit cameras before returning to the
seabed.
"You can't have the side sonar and the camera down
there together, it's one or the other," Houston said.
"We will continue sortie after sortie until such time
as we pick up evidence that there's something unusual on the ocean floor. We
would then send down the camera.
"What we're after is wreckage, a debris field as people
would say."
Up to 11 military planes, three civilian planes and 14 ships
were Tuesday set to take part in the unprecedented search 2,268 kilometres
northwest of Perth, the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) said.
Ocean Shield, which picked up two series of pulses lasting
two hours and 20 minutes and then 13 minutes, are operating at the northern end
of the defined search area. China's Haixun 01 and Britain's HMS Echo will work
the southern end.
Commander William Marks of the US Seventh Fleet has said one
of the signals picked up strengthened for a time, then weakened, indicating
crews were near its source.
"That is encouraging because that is what you would
expect if you are indeed moving toward the black box – that it should get
stronger and as you move away from it, it should get weaker," he told AFP.

This evening I was briefed by representatives from the UK
Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). They informed me that Inmarsat, the
UK company that provided the satellite data which indicated the northern and
southern corridors, has been performing further calculations on the data. Using
a type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort, they
have been able to shed more light on MH370’s flight path.
Based on their new analysis, Inmarsat and the AAIB have
concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last
position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth.
This is a remote location, far from any possible landing
sites. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you
that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian
Ocean.
We will be holding a press conference tomorrow with further
details. In the meantime, we wanted to inform you of this new development at
the earliest opportunity. We share this information out of a commitment to
openness and respect for the families, two principles which have guided this
investigation.
Malaysia Airlines have already spoken to the families of the
passengers and crew to inform them of this development. For them, the past few
weeks have been heartbreaking; I know this news must be harder still. I urge
the media to respect their privacy, and to allow them the space they need at
this difficult time.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak at Saturday's news conference.
LIVE UPDATES FROM THE #MH370 PRESS CONFERENCE AT KLIA
15th March 2014, 2:18PM
By the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak
* We have conducted search operations over land and sea, in
the South China Sea, Straits of Melaka, The Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean.
At every stage we acted on verified information and followed every credible
lead, which sometimes led us nowhere.
* There has been intense speculation. We understand the
desperate need for information. On behalf of the families and those watching
around the world, we have a responsibility to the investigation and the
families to only release information that has been confirmed and corroborated.
* The search was done near MH370’s last known position at
the South China Sea. At the same time it was brought to our attention by RMAF
that based on their primary radar the aircraft (unidentified) made a turn back
and flew north to Straits of Melaka.
* Data was corroborated with relevant authorities, we
expanded area of search to include Straits of Melaka and later to the Andaman
Sea
* Earlier this morning, PM was briefed by FAA, NTSB, AAIB,
the Malaysian authorities and the acting Minister of Transport on new
information that shed further light on what happened to MH370.
* Based on new satellite communications, we can say with
high degree of certainty that the aircraft communications system was disabled
just before the aircraft reached the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Shortly
afterwards near the border between Malaysia and the Vietnamese air traffic
control, the aircraft’s transponder was switched off. From this point onwards,
the RMAF primary data showed that an aircraft which was believed (but not
confirmed) to be MH370 did a turn back and went northwest of Malaysia. This
movement was consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane.
* Based on raw satellite data which was obtained from the
satellite data’s service provider, we can confirm that the aircraft shown in
the primary radar data was MH370.
* After much forensic work and deliberation - the FAA, NTSB,
AAIB and the Malaysian authorities who had been working separately on the same
data concur: according to the new data, the last confirmed communications
between plane and satellite was at 8.11am local time on Saturday 8 March. The
investigation team is making further calculation which will indicate how far
aircraft may have flown after last point of contact to help us to refine
search.
* We are unable to confirm the precise location of the plane
when it last made contact with the satellite. However, based on new data, the
aviation authorities of Malaysia and their intentional counterparts have
determined that the last communications with the satellite was in one of two
possible corridors: Northern Corridor: approximately at the border of
Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan to Northern Thailand. Or Southern corridor stretching
approximately from Indonesia to the Southern Indian Ocean.
* In lieu of the latest development, Malaysia refocused
their investigation to crew and passengers on board. Despite media reports that
the plane was hijacked, I wish to be very clear, that investigation is still
ongoing to determine why it deviated from its original flight path.
* The new information has significantly impacted the nature
and scope of SAR. We are ending our operations at the South China Sea and
reassessing the deployment of our assets. As the two new corridors involved
many countries, the relevant embassies have been invited to the briefing on the
info by technical experts.
* MAS has been informing the families on this new
development. The search for MH370 has entered a new phase over the last 7 days
and we are looking into every possibility.
* For the families and friends of those involved, we hope
this new info brings us one step closer to finding the plane
A Malaysian government official said investigators have concluded that one of the pilots or someone else with flying experience hijacked the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370.
The Associated Press quoted the unnamed official who is involved in the investigation as saying that the hijacking was no longer a theory.
“It is conclusive,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports that Flight MH370 may have flown beyond its last known position as the last satellite transmission from the missing airliner has been traced to the Indian Ocean off Australia, citing a person familiar with the analysis.
According to Bloomberg, a path from Malaysia to the ocean off Australia would have taken as much as 3,000 miles – the maximum distance MH370 could have flown with its fuel load.
Bloomberg also reports that investigators have found that someone in the cockpit of MH370 programmed it to turn away from its original path to Beijing, citing another person from the US government who is familiar with the investigation.
According to Bloomberg, spokesman for Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority Peter Gibson said he wasn't aware of the new information putting MH370 near Perth. However, he added that the Australian Maritime Safety Authority would have jurisdiction of the search if the information were true.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is expected to address a press conference on this latest development at 2pm today.
Harvesting kinetic energy to charge gadgets is nothing new.
We've covered piezoelectric generators that are embedded in sneakers or even
backpacks that charge a battery that can then charge your phone. A new nano
generator developed by researchers at University of Wisconsin, Sun Yat-sen
University in China and the University of Minnesota Duluth could be embedded in
the phone itself or in an outer case so that power harvested from vibrations
like those created by a moving car could be used to instantly charge the phone.
No wires needed.
The researchers describe their device as a mesoporous
piezoelectric nanogenerator. University of Wisconsin explains just what that
means:
The nanogenerator takes advantage of a common piezoelectric
polymer material called polyvinylidene fluoride, or PVDF. Piezoelectric
materials can generate electricity from a mechanical force; conversely, they
also can generate a mechanical strain from an applied electrical field.
Rather than relying on a strain or an electrical field, the
researchers incorporated zinc oxide nanoparticles into a PVDF thin film to
trigger formation of the piezoelectric phase that enables it to harvest
vibration energy. Then, they etched the nanoparticles off the film; the
resulting interconnected pores - called "mesopores" because of their
size - cause the otherwise stiff material to behave somewhat like a sponge.
The sponginess is key. The softer the material is, the more
sensitive it is too small vibrations, the researchers say.
The nanogenerator is made up of the soft mesoporous polymer
film sandwiched between two thin electrode sheets. This flexible film can be
attached to flat or curvy surfaces including human skin, but in this case, the
researchers see it being used in a phone's back panel or housing where it can
automatically harvest energy from vibrations to power the phone directly.
This device has great potential because not only could it
make self-powered phones and sensors possible, but it can also be scaled up to
large manufacturing.
In the heart of the Californian Mojave desert, the world’s largest solar plant officially opened today.
The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System is a project conceived by Google, NRG energy, and Brightsource energy. It contains hundreds of thousands of mirrors and spans an impressive distance of over 5 miles. It is estimated that the $2.2 billion dollar project will generate enough renewable energy to power over 140,000 homes.
This project, the first of its kind in the United States, is seen as a catalyst for things to come. After President Barack Obama’s announcement that his administration is dedicated to tackling climate change, extensive clean energy investments like Ivanpah need to be the top priority.
The US has watched as countries like China and Germany have taken the lead in developing large scale renewable energy projects that lower their carbon footprint and create thousands of new jobs. All the while the US was stuck wondering if it would ever join them as an industry—and world—leader.
Looks like we have our answer.
With the death of coal on the horizon and more impressive projects like Ivanpah planned across the country, the clean energy revolution is not only possible, it’s happening now.
Take a moment to reflect on this news America. Our movement is stronger than ever.
ISLAMABAD: Canada has announced a contribution of $20 million to be paid over the next three years for eradication of polio in Pakistan. The contribution will support the Unicef ‘Polio Plus Initiative’ by increasing coverage, access and effectiveness of polio vaccine.
Add caption
Canadian Minister of State for Multiculturalism Tim Uppal, concluding his visit to the country on Wednesday, said: “Canada’s continued support will increase the number of children immunised, improve access for vaccinators by increasing community acceptance and increase effectiveness of the vaccine by decreasing vulnerability to polio from malnutrition and illness.”
“In Pakistan, Canada was the first donor to tackle the conditions that allow polio to continue to keep a foothold, something of which we can all be proud of,” said Mr Uppal.
Canada is a leading supporter of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s goal of eradicating the disease by 2018, and contributing to fight against polio in several critical areas, including sub-Saharan Africa, Afghanistan and in three primary endemic high-risk areas in Pakistan.
Mr Uppal held talks with government officials and met vaccinators and doctors during the trip. He also visited a mosque, Gurdwara Nankana Sahib and Joseph colony of Christian community in Lahore.
The ‘Polio Plus’ initiative directly engages community groups, religious leaders and elders in endemic areas to address gaps in the delivery of social services, enhance community sensitisation and trust which in turn increases acceptance and safe passage for polio vaccination teams. The initiative supports polio eradication by increasing coverage, access and effectiveness of vaccine and targets three primary endemic high-risk areas.

Unrelated to the ubiquitous apple,
the sugar is a tree native to the tropics of South America and is now grown in
many regions around the world, from China
to Africa. The sugar apple, also known intensely in India, where horticulturalists have
identified ten different cultivated varieties.
The
sugar apple grows in tropical and subtropical areas, but it flourishes in a
variety of soil types, and is moderately resistant to drought. This flexibility
has allowed it to grow on five continents.
The principle use of sugar apples is
raw consumption of the
fruit, which are segmented, knobby clusters of juicy, sweet flesh. In Malaysia,
the fruits are frequently squeezed through a sieve and the juice is added to
ice cream or milk for a sweet treat. High in calories and iron, this fruit is
good for providing extra nourishment for people in the tropics and subtropics.
When eating a sugar apple, one must
mind the seeds, which are abundant, hard, and toxic if ingested. This toxicity , however, has shown promise as a
natural pesticide. Oil extracted from the seeds has been shown in studies to be as effective as conventional pesticides at
eliminating pests from crops such as tomatoes, melons, and soybeans in
greenhouse conditions. Furthermore, subsequent testing showed that the
compounds break down quickly, are no longer toxic after two days, and are
completely inactive after eight days. The same potency allows seed powder to be
used as a lice treatment.
Ironically, the sugar apple has
proven vulnerable to a variety of pests and blights, which has discouraged its
cultivation in the Caribbean and South America.
Indian growers have developed several techniques to counter these pests, which
may help reignite the sugar apple’s popularity in the Americas. In Florida, for example, tropical fruit crop
specialist JH Crane rated the commercial expansion potential for sugar apples and related
hybrids as “good” and “excellent,” respectively.
As
sugar apple cultivation expands, the trees could be grown alongside other
crops, providing natural pesticides and enriching local diets with more
variety. Sugar apples may prove to be more than just a casual tropical snack.
Custard apple benefits:
1.The seeds of the fruit have insecticidal
and abortifacient properties.
2. Custard apple serves as an expectorant,
stimulant, coolant and haematinic and is even useful in treating anemia.
3. Vitamin A present in the fruit is good
for hair, eyes and healthy skin.
4. The fruit, in its unripe form, can be
dried, crushed and used for treating diarrhea and dysentery.
5. The paste of the flesh of the fruit can
be used for local application on ulcers, abscesses and boils.
( Skin
infections such as abcessess or ulcers can be treated with custard apple. Simply
grind the flesh into a thick paste and
apply it to the affected area.)
6. As it contains low fat levels, it is
good for maintaining optimum health.
7. It is a rich source of dietary fiber,
which helps in digestion.
8. Copper is yet another useful ingredient
of custard apple.
(copper which helps the body to
form hemoglobin. This is especially useful for pregnant women as they need
about 1000 micrograms of copper daily. Eating custard apples during pregnancy
is therefore beneficial for the mother and child.)
9. Potassium and Vitamin B6 are also
present in custard apple.
10. Custard apple contains magnesium, which
plays vital role in relaxing muscles and protecting heart against diseases.
11. Custard apple is a storehouse of
Vitamin C, which is an anti oxidant and helps in neutralizing free radicals.

Plants and animals have captured the attention of many conservationists for decades. This same attention is yet to be extended to the usually overlooked but an extremely important group - fungi. The Global Fungal Red List Initiative intends to turn the tide on this scenario and draw people's attention to the plight faced by this unique kingdom.
An 18 month-long programme has been initiated by the Global Fungal Red List Initiative to increase awareness and add to the number of fungal species evaluated and submitted for inclusion in the IUCN Global Red List of Threatened Species.

Fungi are not plants, they live everywhere and are heterotrophs (feed by absorption). Some may look unappealing to the human eye but all are extremely crucial components of nature through their role as nutrient recyclers, decomposers, symbionts and many others. Besides this, fungi are an important part of our lives - found in the food we eat and essential for the production of everyday products such as penicillin, beer and soy sauce.
"The aim is to show to the world that fungi are in need of conservation and they need to be part of the broader conservation agenda," says Gregory Mueller, Vice President of Science and Academic Programmes at Chicago Botanic Garden.
The 2012 IUCN World Conservation Congress is special to the Global Fungal Red List Initiative and to all fungi lovers because for the first time in IUCN's history, there will be a motion explicitly and exclusively devoted to fungi.
In spite of their critical importance, so far less than 10% of the world's estimated species of fungi have been scientifically described. Only one mushroom and two lichenized fungi are included among the 19,817 animal, plant and fungal species listed in the 2012 update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.TM
According to Mueller, little has been done to assess the status of fungi because they have usually been considered difficult to study and there is limited awareness generally.
"One of our big challenges is to figure out how to bring information on fungi to countries because they are important ecologically and as an important food source," adds Mueller. "This new initiative marks a begining for the mycological community and IUCN to build on results and move fungal conservation forward".
The Global Fungal Red List Initiative is a joint venture of all five IUCN Species Survival Commission fungal specialist groups (Chytrid, Zygomycete, Downy Mildew and Slime Moulds, Cup-fungus, Truffle and Allies, Lichen, Mushroom, Bracket and Puffball and Rust and Smuts) and is supported by the IUCN Species Programme.
Suffering From Headaches? Forget The Tylenol and Painkillers and Stick To Water
Next time you have a headache, you might be better off leaving the painkillers at the pharmacy and just drinking a glass of water.
Regularly sipping water can reduce the severity of headaches and migraines, reducing the need for over the counter medication to reduce symptoms.
Scientists found increasing water consumption was enough to ease pain and improve the quality of life in patients who regularly suffer headaches.
Researchers from the University of Maastricht, the Netherlands, noticed in 2005 that a patient told to drink more for a bladder problem saw his migraines get better.
Lead researcher Dr Mark Spigt and his team recruited more than 100 patients who frequently suffered from severe or mild headaches.
The team instructed them on how to ease their discomfort, including reducing stress, improving sleep and avoiding caffeine.
But half the patients were also told to drink 1.5 litres of water a day for three months, on top of their normal liquid intake.
At the end of the study, patients filled out a questionnaire called the Migraine-Specific Quality of Life index to say how they felt. The results, published in journal Family Practice, showed those drinking extra water scored far higher on the questionnaire.
The researchers said: ‘We suspect that some headache patients may benefit from drinking more water and it seems reasonable to recommend they try drinking more for a short period of time to see if they experience an improvement.’
Dr Fayyaz Ahmed, of the Migraine Trust, said the benefits of drinking water could be due to the placebo effect.
But he added: ‘However, regular intake of water and adequately hydrating is healthy, and a lot of people feel better.’
