The Mother of Antioxidants -Glutathione

We have all heard of antioxidants, but have we heard of the mother of all antioxidants? One that is the secret to prevent cancer, heart disease, aging, neurological issues and more? This single antioxidant has been studied in great depth yet most of us know nothing about it and  many doctors have no idea how to address the epidemic of its deficiency in humans.

We are of course talking about Glutathione (pronounced “gloota-thigh-own.”) This is a powerful detoxifier and immune booster and is crucial to a healthy life. Although the body does make some of its own Glutathione, poor food quality, pollution, toxic environments, stress, infections and radiation are all depleting out bodies glutathione.

What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is a simple molecule produced naturally in the body at all times. It’s a combination of three building blocks of protein or amino acids — cysteine, glycine and glutamine.

The best part of glutathione is that is contains sulfur chemical groups that work to trap all the bad things like free radicals and toxins such as mercury and heavy metals in our body then flush them out. This is especially important in our current world of heavy metal bombardment.

Where Can You Get Glutathione?
The body makes it, but it’s often not enough in our strenuous environment. Here are some food sources that either contain glutathione or its precursors to help the body produce more.

* Broccoli
* Brussels sprouts
* Cabbage
* Cauliflower
* Avocados
* Peaches
* Watermelon
* Cinnamon
* Cardamom
* Turmeric (Curcumin)
* Tomatoes
* Peas
* Garlic
* Onions
* Red peppers

Notice they are all healthy foods we often don’t get enough of? This is another big issue with our diets. We consume a lot of junk, meat, dairy and processed foods, items that clinically have been proven to be the number one causes of heart disease and illness yet we consume  them in huge quantities. The key is to limit these and eat a lot of fresh, lively foods that provide nutrients and don’t ask the body to perform a mega job to digest.

You can also increase your exercise as glutathione production increases when you exercise. Breathing and sweating are also great ways to get rid of toxins in the body.

Glutathione Protects Against Chronic Illness
What makes glutathione so important and powerful is that it recycles antioxidants. When your body is dealing with free radicals, it is essentially passing them from one molecule to another. They might go from vitamin C to vitamin E to lipoic acid and then to glutathione where they are cooled off. Antioxidants are recycled at this point and the body can now regenerate another glutathione molecule to go back at it again.

Glutathione is crucial for helping your immune system fight chronic illness as it acts as the carrier of toxins out of your body. Like a fly trap, toxins stick to glutathione and they are carried to the bile into the stools and out of the body. Glutathione is also powerful enough that it has been shown to help in the treatment of AIDS greatly. The body is going to get in touch with oxidants and toxins, the more we can deal with those the better our body will be at staying strong, this is why glutathione is so important.

9 Final Tips
Dr. Mark Thyman has given 9 tips to increase your Glutathione levels. Check them out!

1. Consume sulfur-rich foods. The main ones in the diet are garlic, onions and the cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage, cauliflower, watercress, etc.).

2. Try bioactive whey protein. This is great source of cysteine and the amino acid building blocks for glutathione synthesis. As you know, I am not a big fan of dairy, but this is an exception — with a few warnings. The whey protein MUST be bioactive and made from non-denatured proteins (“denaturing” refers to the breakdown of the normal protein structure). Choose non-pasteurized and non-industrially produced milk that contains no pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics. Immunocal is a prescription bioactive non-denatured whey protein that is even listed in the Physician’s Desk Reference.

3. Exercise boosts your glutathione levels and thereby helps boost your immune system, improve detoxification and enhance your body’s own antioxidant defenses. Start slow and build up to 30 minutes a day of vigorous aerobic exercise like walking or jogging, or play various sports. Strength training for 20 minutes 3 times a week is also helpful.

One would think it would be easy just to take glutathione as a pill, but the body digests protein — so you wouldn’t get the benefits if you did it this way. However, the production and recycling of glutathione in the body requires many different nutrients and you CAN take these. Here are the main supplements that need to be taken consistently to boost glutathione. Besides taking a multivitamin and fish oil, supporting my glutathione levels with these supplements is the most important thing I do every day for my personal health.

4. N-acetyl-cysteine. This has been used for years to help treat asthma and lung disease and to treat people with life-threatening liver failure from Tylenol overdose. In fact, I first learned about it in medical school while working in the emergency room. It is even given to prevent kidney damage from dyes used during x-ray studies.

5. Alpha lipoic acid. This is a close second to glutathione in importance in our cells and is involved in energy production, blood sugar control, brain health and detoxification. The body usually makes it, but given all the stresses we are under, we often become depleted.

6. Methylation nutrients (folate and vitamins B6 and B12). These are perhaps the most critical to keep the body producing glutathione. Methylation and the production and recycling of glutathione are the two most important biochemical functions in your body. Take folate (especially in the active form of 5 methyltetrahydrofolate), B6 (in active form of P5P) and B12 (in the active form of methylcobalamin).

7. Selenium. This important mineral helps the body recycle and produce more glutathione.

8. A family of antioxidants including vitamins C and E (in the form of mixed tocopherols), work together to recycle glutathione.

9. Milk thistle (silymarin) has long been used in liver disease and helps boost glutathione levels.

Yellowstone 'fleeing bison' video goes viral, fuels super-volcano fears

Survival panic, or will she really blow? A video allegedly showing bison 'fleeing' from Yellowstone Park's super-volcano went viral after an earthquake hit the park on March 30.

The backstory began on March 20 when YouTube user Zicutake uploaded a video entitled Animals Fleeing From Yellowstone Supervolcano? showing bison running down a road in Yellowstone Park. This was proof, the video's creators says, that the long dormant super-volcano under the park will erupt in 2014.

Another YouTube video entitled Animals Leaving Yellowstone? Earthquakes and Seismic Activity went online on March 23, and it shows Tom Lupshu, dressed in camouflage and a black beanie, commenting on the same subject.

Lupshu would later be revealed as the 'source' who highlighted the 'bison fleeing' video to Zicutake.

It had all seemed like innocent speculative fun until March 30 when a 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit near the Norris Geyser Basin in the northwest section of Yellowstone, which spans 8,992 sq km of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Although the area is known for small quakes every year, it was the park's strongest quake since 1980.

And that was when the 'bison fleeing' video, picked up on alternative news sites like Epoch Times, started receiving a huge surge in views. But it also triggered a wave of public panic, rippling across the online community and then back to Yellowstone itself.

Not the end of the world – just yet

Yellowstone park officials, who had to field dozens of calls and emails from the concerned public demanding if the video's claims are true, flatly dismissed the 'running bison' evidence.

They say the video actually shows bison galloping down a paved road that leads deeper into the park – not away from it, as was claimed. “It was a spring-like day and they were frisky. Contrary to online reports, it’s a natural occurrence and not the end of the world,” park spokeswoman Amy Bartlett said.

The park also uploaded their own video to dispel the super-volcano speculations.

As for the recent earthquake: Even though geologists confirmed it was the largest to rattle Yellowstone since a 4.8 quake in February 1980, they say it was benign by seismic standards.

Even the fact that it occurred near an area of ground uplift tied to the upward movement of molten rock in the super-volcano – whose mouth, or caldera, is 80km long and 48km wide – failed to worry the scientists.

The fact is neither the quake, the largest among hundreds that have struck near the geyser basin in the last seven months, nor the uplift suggest an eruption sooner than tens of thousands of years, said Peter Cervelli, associate director for science and technology at the US Geological Survey’s Volcano Science Centre in California.

“The chance of that happening in our lifetimes is exceedingly insignificant,” said Cervelli, a scientist with the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory.

Despite assurances by Yellowstone officials and government geologists that the ancient super-volcano beneath the park is not due to explode for aeons have apparently done little to quell fears among the thousands who have viewed recent video postings of the herb.

Robot sub to launch seabed search for missing MH370

 Bluefin-21, the US-supplied underwater drone fitted to Ocean Shield.

The hunt for missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 was set to switch to the ocean floor today using a robot submersible after suspected black box signals were detected, one month to the day since the jet vanished.
After describing sonic "pings" picked up by the naval vessel Ocean Shield as the "most promising lead" so far, the head of the Australian-led search operation warned that hopes of finding surface debris were fading.
Retired Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston said that the moment was nearing to deploy the US-made autonomous underwater vessel Bluefin-21 to scour for wreckage on the seabed.
"I haven't had the discussion this morning, we'll be having that discussion a little later on," he told national radio. "I imagine we'd be getting very close to that point."
The search is now focusing on a 600-kilometre arc of the southern Indian Ocean, far off the coast of western Australia.

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss sounded a note of optimism.
"Today is another crucial day as we try and reconnect with the signals that perhaps have been emanating from the black box flight recorders of MH370," he said.
"The connections two days ago were obviously a time of great hope that there had been a significant breakthrough."
But he added: "It was disappointing that we were unable to repeat that experience yesterday."
Ocean Shield is criss-crossing the area to try to home in on the signals again before launching the five-metre long submersible sonar device, and Truss indicated the deployment was imminent.
"I understand that we are using the autonomous vehicle to examine the waters in the areas of interests of today," he said.
The signals are being investigated as the clock ticks past the 30-day lifespan of the emergency beacons on the two data recorders from the Malaysia Airlines jet, which vanished on March 8 with 239 people on board en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
"As a consequence there is a chance the locator beacon is about to cease transmission, or has ceased transmission," Houston said.
"I think it's absolutely imperative to find something else and hopefully when we put the autonomous vehicle down, its capability is such that it'll be able to find wreckage.
"Unfortunately with the passage of time, oceanic drift and all the rest of it – particularly as a cyclone went through that area in the last few days – the chances of finding anything on the surface are diminishing with time."

Houston explained that the 4.5 kilometre depth of the ocean floor was the absolute operating limit for a Bluefin-21, which is designed for deep sea surveying and can carry video cameras.
"It can't go deeper than that, so it's quite incredible how finely balanced all of this is," he said.
"It's a long, painstaking process, particularly when you start searching the depths of the ocean floor."
When the sonar detects unusual formations on the ocean floor, it is brought back to the surface to fit cameras before returning to the seabed.
"You can't have the side sonar and the camera down there together, it's one or the other," Houston said.
"We will continue sortie after sortie until such time as we pick up evidence that there's something unusual on the ocean floor. We would then send down the camera.
"What we're after is wreckage, a debris field as people would say."
Up to 11 military planes, three civilian planes and 14 ships were Tuesday set to take part in the unprecedented search 2,268 kilometres northwest of Perth, the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) said.
Ocean Shield, which picked up two series of pulses lasting two hours and 20 minutes and then 13 minutes, are operating at the northern end of the defined search area. China's Haixun 01 and Britain's HMS Echo will work the southern end.
Commander William Marks of the US Seventh Fleet has said one of the signals picked up strengthened for a time, then weakened, indicating crews were near its source.

"That is encouraging because that is what you would expect if you are indeed moving toward the black box – that it should get stronger and as you move away from it, it should get weaker," he told AFP. – AFP, April 8, 2014.
