Students come in droves to clean up waters around Port Klang
SOME 100 boats ferried 1,000 volunteers to sea from Port Klang to pick up waste found in the waters, as part of the Cleaner Marina Day project organised by the Rotary Club of Bukit Tinggi Klang.
The volunteers comprising secondary school and college students spent hours at sea and returned with bags full of rubbish. The project was launched by Port Klang Authority chairman Datuk Teh Kim Poo. He also presented RM20,000 in aid of the project.
“This is a good initiative and we hope it will meet its objective of creating awareness among the participants,’’ he said.
Organising chairman K. Krishnan said the turnout exceeded their target of 500 people.
Due to the huge number of volunteers, he said the boats made double trips so all who registered volunteers had the opportunity to go out to sea.
“Those involved are those who care for the preservation and conservation of the environment,” he said.
While in the boat, Krishnan said the participants were given a fishing net and garbage bag to collect waste.
“The Klang Municipal Council provided us with a giant waste bin for us to dump the garbage,’’ he said.
He added that more than 20 government agencies were involved in the event and their staff also participated in the project.
The boat service was provided by the Selangor Sailing Association, Bagain Hailam Sailing Association, Klang Fishermen Association and Port Klang Fishing Association.
“All the organisations have played a great role in ensuring the success of the project,’’ he said.
